Also known as “Old Garden Roses” or “Historic Roses”. These roses have been in our garden from the beginning and have stood the test of time. Heirloom roses are known for their strong fragrance. The buds begin to open in mid-June.
- Seven Sisters- This rose is unique in that it blooms in clusters of 7 or more flowers, each with a slightly different color ranging from white to mauve. A very vigorous rambler, ideal for a low fence.
- White Rose of York- also called Alba Semi-Plena. A tall shrub can be used as a climber. The white flowers are fragrant and plentiful at the height of bloom in June.
- Apothecary’s Rose- an ancient rose first noted in Persia. Was brought to England by crusaders in the 13th century. Became the medicinal rose of the Middle Ages and was common in monastery healing gardens. It became the symbol of the House of Lancaster and was on the coat-of-arms in their battle for the crown of England. An excellent rose with deep pink flowers. Blooms in mid-late June.
- Harison’s Yellow- a bright yellow rose, the first to bloom in the spring in my garden. Harison’s Yellow is the first really hardy rose of this color. It took New England by storm when first available in the 1830’s. Later became the Yellow Rose of Texas and now grows in all 50 states.
- Jenny Duval- a gallica of unusual beauty. The flower color changes from a pink and violet to a lavender and mauve as the bloom ages. A robust, easy to grow rose.
- Nestor- this is an old gallica rose that is very vigorous in our Maine garden. The very double pink cupped and quarted flowers are exceptional.
- Alba Maxima- A tall shrub rose of great beauty when it blooms in June. The plant is simply covered with fragrant white flowers. Can be used as screen or hedge with a mature height of 6 to 8 feet.
- Anne’s Rose- our first pink rose of spring with long stems that invite picking for a most beautiful and fragrant bouquet.
- Michal's Rose- This rose is the queen of my garden. A most beautiful pink with very full bloom. The most fragrant plant in my garden, a healthy vigorous rose.
